The Makem and Spain Brothers are making a triumphant return to Ottawa after their sensational Canadian debut at Centrepointe Theatre in October 2004. Truly the definitive Irish folk group of their generation, these five – Shane, Conor and Rory Makem, and Mickey and Liam Spain – are tried and true veterans of the Irish song tradition. Whether belting out old favourites in the spirit of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem or singing their own sparkling new compositions that are true to the genre, the Makem and Spain Brothers are well out in front of the pack, and advancing rapidly.
Not in the past 30 years has a group taken the international stage with such vocal power and stage presence. Masters of a host of musical instruments and armed with five unique voices, the group delivers three-part harmonies blended perfectly for what many have described as a wall of sound. The Makem and Spain Brothers excel onstage where their talent and enthusiasm mesmerize not only long-standing fans but those who have never before experienced the joy of folk music. As you listen to these Irishmen, you can almost taste the salty aroma of a Galway rain, or picture a band of rebels assembling at the rising of the moon.
This stalwart, road-tested Irish vocal group has played before millions of people across North America and Ireland, highlighting national PBS specials and popular Irish talk shows along the way.
Shane, Conor and Rory Makem, all born in Ireland, continue the lineage of one of Irish music’s dynasties, begun by their grandmother Sarah Makem. Their legendary father, the late Tommy Makem, along with the Clancy Brothers, helped bring his country’s music into the international spotlight, through rousing new arrangements and adaptations of the old songs.
Mickey Spain’s rich, baritone voice and Liam’s mastery of stringed instruments, honed through years of performing, quickly found a home when the two met the Makems and the two sets of brothers realized the power of their combined talents.
